The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization that was founded in Washington, D.C. on February 19, 1864, by Justus H. Rathbone. The organization was established during a time of great social and political upheaval in the United States, as the Civil War raged on. Justus H. Rathbone, a clerk in the U.S. War Department, conceived the idea for the order as a response to the need for friendship, charity, and benevolence during this turbulent period.

The name "Knights of Pythias" is derived from the legend of Damon and Pythias, two friends from ancient Syracuse, who epitomized the values of loyalty and self-sacrifice. This legend served as a source of inspiration for the organization's foundational principles.

The Knights of Pythias was founded on a platform of three primary principles:

Friendship: The order promotes the idea that true friendship can be developed and nurtured among its members.
Charity: Knights of Pythias have historically been involved in various charitable and benevolent activities to support those in need.
Benevolence: The organization emphasizes the importance of extending goodwill to all people and making contributions to the broader community.
